DescriptionThis early example of tiraz has a bold, elegant inscription in silk and is different from later examples in that each letter is done individually in the tapestry technique. The inscription is incomplete, but mentions the Abbasid caliph al-Muti (946–974 AD). It is done in the angular Arabic script known as Kufic, used in textiles until the 12th century.
