Description

Sarcophagus Fragment depicting a Funeral Procession

The man on the left, holding a roll, is clad in a toga with his head covered by part of the garment. This type of figure capite velo (with head covered) is a sign of piety towards the gods. He may be a priest or entering sacred gound. The soldier behind him may be expressing grief with his arm raised over his head.
