This textile was manufactured during the period of French sympathy for American revolutionary struggles. It features two medals struck by Benjamin Franklin to commemorate the Franco-American alliance and the American victory at Yorktown. It was drawn by the leading designer of the day, Jean-Baptiste Huet, who was known for his skill at depicting animals, as is seen in the two main rustic scenes. Huet owned a large collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish prints and borrowed figures and motifs from at least 15 different artists, including François Boucher, to create this design.
