The unknown maker of this sampler was carrying out a routine task as part of her training, yet her creativity and humour have personalized what could in other hands have been a dull and standardized exercise. She embroidered figures and floral designs – birds, deer, rabbits, turtles, and monkeys within a floral border – and the words ESTDEHADOLOHIZO (THIS SAMPLER WAS MADE BY). Samplers like this, characterized by the random placing of individual motifs, are called spot samplers.
