This woman's chinoiserie evening dress was made by Tom Ford for the Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Fall/Winter collection 2004-2005. It is made of silk, with sequin embroidery overall. The dress is cut as cheongsam with a train and is decorated as a Chinese imperial robe. This YSL/Ford dress is a brilliant homage to traditional and modern Chinese dress that fuses traditional imperial robe iconography and colour with the sexy western-influenced cut of the 1920s and 30s cheongsam (symbolized by Hollywood stars such as Anna May Wong, and Shanghai nightlife and courtesans) and YSL’s famous 1977 Chinese collection.
This iconic Paris design brackets the work of two of the most important fashion houses in the late 20th and early 21st century: Yves Saint Laurent and Tom Ford. This is the only design in the collection by Tom Ford and the most contemporary example of YSL to date. This dress is from Ford's last collection for YSL: Ford presented five of these designs at the end of the collection. They celebrate Paris dressmaking skills and hours of beading.
