DescriptionThe sampler is framed, and worked in paper punched with regularly spaced holes. It consists of black, rose, green, red, pink, and white silk and wool & cotton threads used. It has a border of geometric leaves and flowers. The sampler records the "family register" of the Dorland family from the birth of Joseph B. Dorland in 1803 to the death of Sarah Jane Dorland in 1881. Below the register is a poem: "a solitary blessing few can find: our joys with those we love are intertwined ... But scatters roses to adorn his own." "merrium n. Dorland, friends' seminary, 8th mo. 26th 1851."
