For his Fall/Winter 2007 collection, Jeremy Laing wanted a printed silk that would enhance the cut of his fashions, so he began to design one. His textile was inspired by mineral specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. Laing contacted Dr. John Rakavon, a professor in the Department of Geology at Miami University, Ohio, who provided him with a polarized image of a thin section of basalt from the Oregon Plateau region of the Pacific Northwest. The digital image was the basis for the textile repeat created by Laing in collaboration with Toronto graphic designer Jeremy Stewart. The design was then emailed to a textile printer in China who was sourced via the internet. It is created with a single repeat that is printed in a large scale for the dress and a smaller repeat for the blouse.
