Description

Women in Tehuantepec commission their gala ensembles from skilled embroiderers. As Teresa de Jesús Rosado Desales explains, “This work has been in the family for a very long time. It's what we learn as we grow up. It's in our blood. This is the culture of Tehuantepec.” Designs are drawn freehand with a white wax crayon. The finest work is done in satin stitch with a needle, but chain-stitched designs are faster because they are done with a hook.
