DescriptionThese elegant slippers were inspired by European trade with China. The chinoiserie scenes depict Asian men, birds, and sea creatures on a cloud-like background. Such informal shoes would have been worn with a smoking ensemble at home: the sole leather is very soft which suggests indoor use only. Given their unusual yet fine construction and excessively narrow soles, they may have been made for exhibition rather than retail: many shoemakers displayed their finest work at World Fairs and expositions.
