DescriptionIn prehistoric northern Mexico, food, pigments, and other items were ground down using mortars and pestles like this one.  Individuals might spend hours each day using these tools in repetitve actions suffused with meaning.  In the case of the pestle,  its human form pounding down on the mortar may have symbolized more broadly the power that humans held to transform raw material into finished products.
