DescriptionIn this studio portrait by the well-known firm of Bourne & Shepherd, the sitter's knee closest to the viewer is out of focus so that objects along the plane of his face can be clear. This was one of the technical limitations of camera lens at this time and the highlights in white paint may have been used to mask other imperfections in the image.
