DescriptionThe function of the exaleiptron or kothon shape is uncertain, but it probably held oil, since the curved lip seems designed to stop the liquid from spilling. Corinthian versions of this shape are usually found in ritual contexts, where it may have been used as a lamp, but later Attic versions, with a pedestal foot and lid, seem to be a container for perfumed oil. The decoration is a pattern in the 'white style' and dates late in the Late Corinthian period.
