Sarcophagus with Greeks Fighting the Amazons

Mythological battle scenes frequently decorated Roman sarcophagi from about 150 to 170 AD. These legendary battles symbolized the victory of a civilized people over the barbarian -- of good over evil. In a religious or funerary context, this stood for the deceased person's triumph over evil in the afterlife.
