DescriptionThis hat has a crown of black satin with four rows of stitching. There is a stiff upturned brim trimmed with imitation sea otter. The crown is gathered to the centre under a gold button in gilt filigree setting. Fringe of heavy red silk cord covers the crown. The hat is lined with red cotton and there are blue cotton adjustable strings. Winter hats were worn from the ninth month to the first half of the third month in the following year. The faceted crystal finial indicates fifth rank. This shape of hat finial was worn on formal occasions.
