Description

This extremely rare type of huipil is now extinct. It was woven using a complex technique known as weft-wrap openwork. To create openings in the cloth, weft (horizontal) threads are laboriously wrapped around select warp (vertical) threads. According to researchers who observed the technique in the 1940s, it could take as long as four months to complete a single panel.
