Description

Overshot employs a supplementary pattern weft which skips or "overshoots" the woven structure, usually tabby. These four-shaft coverlets were more popular than all other types of bedcovers made in North America. Outside the areas where the French Canadian weaving tradition dominated, overshot coverlets and pieced quilts were the main decorative bed furnishings. This is the first Canadian coverlet to enter the ROM collection. Its acquisition initiated an important new field of research, the Ontario Textile Project.
