This vessel is an Africa-style ceramic, named after a neighbourhood in Guácimo, Costa Rica. These vessels were typically used for drinking, especially a maize-based drink common in ritual ceremonies. This particular vessel is decorated with snakes curling around the legs. Snakes were believed to possess supernatural powers due to their ability to shed skin, fully inhabit all dimensions of their environment, and deliver a toxic bite that could easily lead to death. Pottery depicting snakes could have been used to emphasize an individual’s power or to seek protection from these dangerous animals.
