Beaded necklace
Medium:shell, greenstone
Geography: Piura Valley, Peru
Date: pre-1532 AD
Object number: 938.61.4
DescriptionIn the Pre-Columbian Andes, beads made from shell and greenstone circulated widely. This necklace has a mix of these beads, as well as shell pendants. Reportedly from the far northern coast of Peru, the arid conditions could have preserved the string originally used for the necklace. Yet it is more likely that the beads were strung together more recently, perhaps from beads recovered from a range of contexts.
