DescriptionThe fossil record shows that the horse lineage appeared in North America early in the Age of Mammals. Horses were important members of the ecosystem throughout the Age of Mammals - they became extinct in North America at the end of the Pleistocene, but survived in Europe and Asia. The horse displayed here represents one of North America's last Pleistocene species.
