DescriptionPhenacodus intermedius belonged to a diverse group of extinct hoofed mammals that arose in the late Paleocene, 60 million years ago and became extinct in the middle Eocene, 50 million years ago. Paleontologists are currently in the process of determining the complex relationships that existed between species of this large and diverse group. Phenacodus was probably a distant relative of the perissodactyls, a diverse group of hoofed herbivores, which included species such as the zebra, horse, donkey, tapir and the rhinoceros. Although a herbivore, its limb proportions suggests that it was not as swift-footed as its living relatives.
