DescriptionThe plated dinosaur, Stegosaurus, walked on all four legs, slowly like an elephant. It used its powerful spiked tail for defence. Although the bony plates on its back look like armour, they were not attached to the backbone and would not have provided any real defence from predators. They may have been used to identify members of the same species, or in sexual displays to attract a mate. They may have also functioned as heat exchangers, to increase the animal’s surface area allowing it to warm up or cool down more quickly.
